Susan Akers, DVM
Dr. Susan Akers received her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from Louisiana State University in 2001. She earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. Following graduation, Dr. Akers worked at a multi-doctor practice very similar to Ponchatoula Animal Hospital in Waco, TX. For three years, she also worked shifts at the local Emergency Clinic before starting a family. After 8 years in Texas, Dr. Akers and her family moved to Louisiana and she started at Ponchatoula Animal Hospital in April 2017.
Dr. Akers is a member of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Florida Parishes Veterinary Medical Association, and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association. Her special interests in veterinary medicine include small mammals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and hedgehogs as well as abdominal surgery.
Dr. Akers and her husband, Cade, have 3 daughters Cecilia, Emma, and Lia. They met in veterinary school and Cade works for the USDA as a supervisory public health veterinarian. Their pet family consists of a Labrador Retriever named Gunner, a Pug named Ellie, and two cats named Lunchbox and Rosita.
In her spare time, Dr. Akers likes to watch her daughter play soccer and she raises Monarch caterpillars. Additionally, Dr. Akers is an active member of the Loranger Baptist Church.
